“Mau ka Leo” is a digital storytelling space created by the Bishop Museum to capture and share the knowledge and stories surrounding its collections. This initiative aims to preserve the connections between materials and the people who contribute to their meaning, making the museum’s vast holdings in humanities collections more accessible and understood. By documenting cultural and institutional knowledge through multimedia stories, “Mau ka Leo” enriches the understanding of the museum’s materials beyond standard metadata, celebrating the knowledge of ancestral presence by Pacific people. This project is supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities and donors to the museum’s Digital Futures Initiative, highlighting the importance of storytelling in perpetuating Hawaiʻi’s material culture.

Project Banaba

The Board of Directors of Bishop Museum today announced the appointment of Dee Jay Mailer to a three-year term as president and CEO, effective immediately. Mailer has been leading the Museum on an interim basis since Feb. 2, 2023. The board’s vote, taken at its regularly scheduled quarterly meeting on Wednesday, was motivated in part by enthusiastic feedback about Mailer’s leadership from staff, donors and community members.

Backyard Adventures

“Backyard Adventures,” an interactive science exhibit at Bishop Museum from Nov. 19, 2022, to Aug. 20, 2023, invites keiki and their ʻohana to explore the wonders of the outdoors right in their own backyards. This exhibit transforms the museum into a vibrant space where visitors can experience the world from a bee’s perspective, watch plants grow in super time through a digital garden, and discover nocturnal creatures. With activities like a giant skipping rope and backyard-themed mini golf, “Backyard Adventures” aims to inspire the next generation of citizen scientists, emphasizing the fun and importance of outdoor exploration. Created by Scitech in Perth, Australia, and produced by Imagine Exhibitions, this exhibit aligns with Bishop Museum’s mission to foster a love for natural sciences, biodiversity, and conservation through engaging and playful interactives.
