Developed by filmmaker Chris Johns and snail conservationists in Hawaiʻi, Kāhuli is a short documentary that follows Bishop Museum scientists and their partners at the State’s Snail Extinction Prevention Program in a shared mission to protect Hawaiʻi’s native land snails, kāhuli, icons of resilience, beauty, and deep cultural significance. The film reveals how conserving these small creatures is inseparable from conserving the ʻāina, the language, and the stories that define Hawaiʻi.
Produced with support from Bishop Museum, the Hawaiʻi Department of Land and Natural Resources, Pacific Islanders in Communications, and other partners, Kāhuli celebrates the connection between science, culture, and the living heritage of these islands.
