About the Program
Drop into a seat aboard the Exploration Vessel (E/V) Nautilus from the comfort of the J. Watumull Planetarium! This research vessel is on a 20-day expedition right now to explore never before surveyed areas of deep seafloor around the Hawaiian Islands using the most advanced underwater technologies. With the ship’s remotely operated vehicle (ROV) Hercules, acoustic mapping systems, and telepresence technologies, take a real-time look at the world beneath the waves.
On this expedition, scientists, engineers, and team members currently aboard the ship are exploring and studying:
- Unexplored ridges and seamounts in the eastern portion of the Papahānaumokuākea National Marine Sanctuary
- Biodiversity and Geology of abyssal plain habitats southwest of the Main Hawaiian Islands
- Deep-sea coral monitoring capabilities using a recently developed benthic lander and low-light camera system
In this two-way live interaction, visitors of all ages can join and ask questions to the vessel’s team, including Bishop Museum’s own Science Curriculum & Engagement Coordinator, Gina Errico. After the live interaction, take a deeper dive with Bishop Museum’s Ichthyology and Marine Invertebrate Zoology collections.
