Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum celebrates our namesake Ke Aliʻi Bernice Pauahi Bishop (1831-1884) on the 193rd anniversary of her birth with mele and moʻolelo on Thursday, December 19, 2024.
Born on December 19, 1831, Bernice Pauahi Bishop was the last royal descendant of the Kamehameha lineage. By virtue of her lineage and royal station, Pauahi inherited an extensive collection of mea makamae, treasured Hawaiian artifacts and royal family heirlooms. Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum was founded in 1889 by Pauahi’s husband, Charles Reed Bishop, in honor of his late wife as a repository of her extensive collections, which have expanded into the largest collection of cultural artifacts, documents, photographs and natural science specimens documenting the history and living cultures of Hawai‘i and the wide expanse of Moananuiākea.
Ke Ali‘i Bernice Pauahi Bishop cared deeply for her lāhui, her culture and for the life of Hawaiʻi. Inspired by Pauahi’s dedication, the museum strives to inspire our community and visitors through the exploration, celebration, and perpetuation of the extraordinary history, culture, and environment of Hawaiʻi and the Pacific.
E Ō, E Ka Wahine Celebrating Ke Aliʻi Bernice Pauahi Bishop commemorates the birth, life and legacy of Pauahi with special presentations and tours prompting museum guests to reflect on our origins, our mission and our future. The program commences at 12:30 p.m. and includes a lei presentation, tributes, mele and moʻolelo for Pauahi. Special tours of Hawaiian Hall honoring Ke Aliʻi Bernice Pauahi Bishop will be offered throughout the day.
