E Ulu A Paʻa Fundraiser & Online Auction 2025

Please join us at Bishop Museum’s premier fundraising event, E Ulu A Pa‘a, on August 23, 2025. This year, we recognize Mary Kawena Pukui, the prolific author, composer, teacher, and historian whose legacy shapes our understanding of Hawaiian culture to this day.

Mary Kawena Pukui spent over 50 years documenting, translating, and compiling Hawaiian knowledge systems during a time when Hawaiian culture and traditions were being lost. She produced and translated over 50 seminal publications like the “Hawaiian-English Dictionary,” “‘Ōlelo Noʻeau: Hawaiian Proverbs and Poetical Sayings,” and “Place Names of Hawaiʻi.”

Pukui worked at Bishop Museum while recording and documenting the largest library of oral histories of her time. In one of her recordings (translated by her daughter, Pat Namaka Bacon), she says, “I have only one favor to ask of people: to take care of their stories, let them be kept in a permanent place … so that their grandchildren and great-grandchildren can come and hear our voices. Go directly to the house of the Princess, listen to the voice of their ancestors speaking. When we are gone, should your grandchildren want to hear your voice, my voice, go to the house of Pauahi.”

Be the First to Explore EXCORE

We are opening a brand-new exhibition, Explore EXCORE, in the J. M. Long Gallery just in time for E Ulu A Paʻa. EXCORE is the Center for the Exploration of Coral Reef Ecosystems, an entity within Bishop Museum focused on innovating the latest technologies to explore coral-reef environments to discover and document biodiversity in ways previously not possible. Be the first to see amazing underwater imagery captured by the global pioneers who work at Bishop Museum and learn why biodiversity is so important to the future of humanity.
