(Re)Generations: Challenging Scientific Racism in Hawai’i 「蘇る世代の絆 :
ハワイの科学人種主義に挑む」展は、人類学者ルイス・R・サリバン博士が創作した写真
と石膏の胸像のコレクションを考察します。 このコレクションは、俗に「純血」と考えられ
るハワイ先住民の身体上の特徴を測定、分類する手段として集められたものです。 この
コレクションは、ビショップミュージアムの推奨と援助を受け、1921年の第2回国際優生
学会議で紹介されました。 「人種科学」を通しての人類の身体測定、分類、それぞれの分
類への割当をするという手段は、奴隷制度、ディスプレイスメント（強制退去）、植民地支
配、優生学、更にはジェノサイド（集団虐殺）を正当化することに利用されてきました。 現
在では、人種という観念は生物学的に無意味であると認識されていて、サリバン博士が
行った類の研究も真実性がないと判断されてから長い年月が過ぎました。 それにもかか
わらず、人種という観念、更に一定の人間集団がより価値があるとする優等人種という社
会通念と、それによって後押しされている組織的不平等は、人々に根強い精神的傷害を
及ぼしています。
サリバン博士の写真と胸像は、科学の人種主義がもたらした偏見や不平等に深く関わって
いますが、ビショップミュージアムのハワイ系図学研究にとっては主要な情報源の一つとな
りました。 蘇る世代の絆展は、ハワイ先住民の子孫の方達が先祖、家系図の繋がり、そして
家族の再発見の手段として利用することで、コレクションが新たに蘇ったことを記念するため
に開催されています。 展示されている写真は、子孫の方達のご協力を得て選別されたもので
す。 新たに加えられた子孫とのインタビュー及び一家の貴重な遺品を通して、サリバン博士
の研究に参加した人々がどの様な生き方をし、次世代に受け継がれていったものが何であっ
たのか垣間見る事ができます。 今や、コレクションの写真と胸像はサリバン博士の優生学研
究の枠外で蘇り、新たな解釈が行われるようになったのです。
この展示を開催すること自体がミュージアムの最終目的ではなく、この先、ハワイ先住民コ
ミュニティー及びその皆さんと深く関わりのある地域社会の方々と、ミュージアムとしては
どの様に連携を深め、貢献していけるのかという対話を始める一歩に繋がる事を望んでい
ます。
