Education FAQs

  • The following rates and programs are valid only for schools in the Hawaiian Islands (Pre-K through 12th grade).
  • For other groups, including college groups (from Hawai‘i and elsewhere), K-12 school groups from continental US, adult groups and others, please call Bishop Museum Visitor Experience at 808.847.8251 or email Visitor Groups.
  • If you are a Hawai‘i-based, Pre-K through 12th grade school, you can make a reservation as follows:
    • Fill out our online Book a Field Trip Form
    • We do not accepts phone reservations. All reservations must start with a reservation form which you can find here.
  • Please have the following information ready:
    • School/School Type
    • Three alternate dates
    • Contact Person
    • Phone/Email
    • Number of students
    • Grade or Age
    • Number of adults
    • Arrival and departure time
  • Once a reservation request is received, we first confirm the date of your visit.
  • Once the date is confirmed, we will send you an invoice and Scheduling & Cancellation Policy to be signed by your group’s leader.
  • Once payment is received, we will send you a final confirmation with instructions for the day of your visit, the day’s schedule, a map of the museum, and your payment receipt.
  • Full payment for the field trip must be made no later than three weeks before the scheduled date of the field trip.

We’re proud to offer a wide variety of programs, but that can make field trip planning challenging.  As a result, we’ve developed three field trip package levels to help guide a smooth planning process.

  • Fees for Hawai‘i-based Pre K – 12th grade schools are listed below.
    • Teacher-Led Field Trips – $5.00 per student –  for up to 30 minutes of teacher-led time in each space.
    • Museum-Led Package – $7.00 per student –  for up to two facilitated experiences plus the teacher-led time in our public spaces
    • Museum Program Super Pack – $9.00 per student – for pre-set programs that dive more deeply into our set themes
    • Thanks to the generous support of the City and County of Honolulu Grant in Aid award, we are pleased to offer reduced admission fees for Title I schools.  These discounts are offered first-come, first-served for reservations.

  • You are eligible for these fees ONLY IF:
    • Reservations are made at least three weeks in advance
    • You have a minimum of 5 students
    • Your students are Hawai‘i residents
    • Your students are Pre-K – Grade 12
    • You bring the required number of chaperones.
  • For students: because we are providing customized education programs for the students, passes and discounts cannot be applied to the field trip fees.
  • For adults: as of June 2017, adults may not use their Bishop Museum memberships when chaperoning Field Trips.
  • A best practice for educators is to plan your trip at least two months prior to the trip date in order to secure both your transportation and an open time slot on our Museum campus.
  • We encourage educators to plan trips during the fall and early into the semester for two reasons:
    • A large amount of education research shows that field trips aid in motivation, memory, and generating interest in subjects and,
    • Because demand is highest after Spring Break.
  • Minimally, reservations must be made at least one month in advance.
  • For groups making reservations less than one month in advance:
    • Planetarium may not available
    • Guided tours may not available
    • Your students will not be eligible for the education rate
    • Payment in full is due at the time of confirmation. Payment is non-refundable.
  • To maintain a quality experience for all of our visitors, the minimum number of required adults are as follows:
    • Pre-K – K: 1 adult per 5 students
    • 1st -12th : 1 adult per 10 students
  •  Required adults are FREE. Additional chaperones are $7 ($6.00 for Title I chaperones) each with the exception of chaperones accompanying special needs students.
  • Yes. Bishop Museum does have covered lunch areas and your group will be booked into a lunch area if you wish to have lunch during your visit.
  • Please bring lunches in boxes or bags with school name printed on the outside. We will assign a storage area for your lunches as they will not be allowed in the museum’s buildings.
  • Full payment for the field trip must be made no later than three weeks before the scheduled date of the field trip.
  • Checks, school purchase orders, credit cards, and cash (must be exact as change is not given) are accepted.

  • A typical field trip begins at 9am, includes about 2 hours of programming that is decided upon by you and our education staff prior to your visit, and concludes with lunch on campus.
  • We recommend arriving 15 minutes prior to your first program. The earliest arrival time to the museum is at 8:45am.
  • Depending on the age of your students, your daily schedule can be from 1 hour up to 3 hours, including lunch.
  • All Hawai‘i teachers may visit the museum at no charge any day prior to your scheduled visit to become familiar with the Museum grounds and exhibits. Please contact the Bishop Museum education department (848-4168 or schoolgroups@bishopmuseum.org) to set up this visit.
  • Thanks to the generous support of the City and County of Honolulu Grant in Aid award, we are pleased to offer a handful of bus grants to Title I schools. They will be available, first come, first served.  Please add this note to your reservation form comments section.

We know that bus transportation on O’ahu is difficult to arrange. We appreciate the time and energy our teachers put into coordinating this aspect of the field trip. We hope that, in the future,  the transportation barrier can be overcome through more bus scholarships and Museum outreach (check out our portable programs here).

  • We strive to balance our field trip visitor experiences with those of our everyday visitors, special events, and public programs. As a result, we cannot book or change field trips within two weeks of the requested date without incurring a service fee of $15.00.  We may waive this fee under extenuating circumstances.
  • Teacher-led time through spaces is limited to 30 minutes.  We are working to build system that will allow our teacher ‘Ohana to explore the museum at longer lengths.  The Partner Level One training is under development.  In the meantime, please contact us for confirmation that you can extend your time in a given space.
  • We want to help deepen the connection between our visitors and our collections. We find that an orientation and mini training helps our partner educators make the most meaning of the field trip for themselves and their students.
