The Director of Education is responsible for providing creative and strategic leadership for Bishop Museum’s informal educational initiatives in alignment with the Museum’s mission, vision, and strategic plan. Interpretation, STEM/STEAM-based curriculum development, audience outreach, docent training, and a proven ability to conceptualize and implement innovative programs are viewed as essential components of the role.

S/he will work together with staff across the Museum along with external stakeholders and partners to develop and implement a long-range educational growth plan that aligns with the Museum’s strategic plan, fosters partnerships, and enhances access for learners of all ages to the Museum’s rich resources. S/he must have the ability to develop and cultivate relationships with potential educational partners for the Museum and work creatively as a part of a team to broaden the Museum’s educational impact on its audiences.

S/he will lead the Education team in working collaboratively with collections, research, exhibits, visitor experience, marketing, membership, fundraising and other staff, as relevant, in the concept generation and content development of unique, relevant, and innovative programs. S/he will take primary responsibility for operational planning, budgeting, staff training, program delivery and follow-up evaluation, and will ensure seamless integration of multi-faceted educational programming into the daily operations of the Museum in order to create a meaningful visitor experience and meet attendance and educational goals. S/he must be able to work effectively with institutional advancement, senior leadership and others to identify and secure grant funding support and beneficial partnerships for the Museum.

Other Duties and Responsibilities Include

  • Manage the Museum’s overall daily program offerings for the general public, in collaboration staff across the Museum.
  • Manage Bishop Museum Planetarium and Observatory, including creating, implementing and evaluating planetarium programming for planetarium.
  • Develop and implement policies, procedures, and evaluative/measurement tools that will ensure the Museum’s educational offerings conform to museum best practices.
  • Manage education-related grants including federal agencies (NSF, NOAA, NASA, US Department of Education and others), State of Hawai‘i, and national and local private foundations. Serve as Principal Investigator on education-related grants.
  • Develop partnerships with external groups aligned with the museum’s strategic goals to broaden the Museum’s educational impact.
  • Manage the content aspects of the docent programs.
  • Work closely with sales and other museum staff in crafting experiences that will provide an additional educational experience and increase revenues.
  • Represent the Museum and its education programs in venues ranging from conferences to special events, and media appearances.


  • Advanced degree in education or related field required.
  • Demonstrated ability to obtain significant levels of grant funding and develop collaborations and community partnerships.
  • Proven, successful track record of educational and/ or informal learning program development and implementation in museum or related public environment.
  • Excellent administrative and management skills, preferably in a museum or related setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and manage a department and staff with limited budgets to achieve organizational goals.
  • Excellent communication and presentations skills.
  • Experience teaching in a classroom setting a plus.
  • Solutions-oriented, diplomatic problem solver and true team player.

  • Must have own car with proof of insurance and valid Hawai‘i Drivers License.
  • Organized, analytical, and detail-oriented.
  • Ability to manage multiple ongoing projects with little supervision.
  • Ability to network with relevant community members, public officials and government agency staff.
  • Computer-literate with proficiency required in word processing, databases, spreadsheets, and desktop publishing.
  • Ability to read, write and speak English clearly and proficiently.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills for a variety of audiences.
  • Professional, business-like appearance and demeanor.
  • Familiarity with Hawaiian or Pacific culture and history a plus.

Hours: Full-time, some evening and weekends required
Salary: Commensurate with experience
