Winner Receives Prize Package and More
The thrill continues this summer, as Bishop Museum’s popular Dinosaurs Unleashed exhibit gains a new character. Bishop Museum has adopted a dinosaur for the summer and we need Hawai‘i’s help to name her! Visitors will soon come face to face with a roaring, sniffing, carnivorous, Gorgosaurus, walking about the Castle Memorial Building exhibit. Dino-fans are encouraged to participate in Bishop Museum’s Name the Dino contest.
From May 11-June 8, 2015, local residents can go online and enter their suggestion for an original name with an explanation of why they chose it. The person with the winning name will be awarded a dinosaur-sized prize package valued at over $250. The grand prize includes a special face to face visit with the newest member of our ‘ohana, a Bishop Museum Patron level membership for the winner and their family to enjoy free admission all year round, two tickets to the Hawai‘i Advanced Screening of Jurassic World and an array of dinosaur goodies! The contest winner and dinosaur’s name will be revealed at a special welcome party on Saturday, June 13, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at Bishop Museum.
Following the reveal, our brown eyed girl will appear on weekends to explore the Dinosaurs Unleashed exhibit on Saturdays and Sundays at 10:30 a.m. all summer long until Sept. 6, 2015. Our new friend will be accompanied by a trainer, who will answer questions about the dinosaur as the two walk throughout the exhibit. The dinosaur is actually a 15-foot long, full body costume that the museum’s trained staff will bring to life so visitors can learn about dinosaur biology, anatomy, movement, and behavior. With complex internal mechanics and audio effects, the costume is extremely realistic, giving visitors a very convincing experience of a close-up dinosaur encounter. Note: This program depicts a realistic meat-eating dinosaur walking freely throughout the exhibit and may be frightening for small children.
