This Earth Day, Saturday, April 22, 2023 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. – Bishop Museum’s Science & Sustainability Festival brings together Museum scientists, educators, cultural practitioners, and community partners to highlight the ongoing work needed to protect biodiversity and build a sustainable future in Hawai‘i.

This one-day festival features keiki activities, workshops, exhibition highlights, special presentations, and interactive performances with scientists, cultural practitioners, and community organizers on the front lines of biodiversity research and conservation efforts in Hawai‘i. All day – enjoy music and performances with food and drink vendors on the Museum lawns.

Keynote Conversation: Ola I Ka Wai

Location: Great Lawn Main Stage
What can you do to help protect O‘ahu’s primary aquifer? Join Ernie Lau, Chief Engineer of Board of Water Supply, David Kimo Frankel, attorney for Sierra Club of Hawai‘i, and Danielle Espiritu of O‘ahu Water Protectors in a moderated conversation.

MoveMEANT Sessions w/ Dancers Unlimited + Uncle Calvin Hoe
12 p.m., 1:30 p.m., 2:30p.m.
Location: Science Adventure Center Lawn
Master implement maker and water rights activist Uncle Calvin Hoe leads interactive movement sessions for all ages inspired by mo‘olelo and community building.

Climate Action Storytime

Sierra Club of Hawaiʻi, Wisdom Circles, and Hui Aloha ʻĀina o Honolulu present storytime readings that showcase how keiki and ʻōpio play a leading role in climate action, protecting wai, and advocating for a sustainable future.

Sustainability & Featherwork w/ Kawika Lum-Nelmida

Head to the Ola Ka Noʻeau exhibition and meet hulu practitioner Kawika Lum-Nelmida and Curator of Hawaiʻi and Pacific Cultural Resources Sarah Kuaiwa as they talk story about how sustainable practices inform Hawaiian featherwork today.

Hidden Pacific – Planetarium Show
Location: J. Watumull Planetarium

A pioneering film that profiles some of the Pacific Ocean’s most beautiful islands and marine national monuments — breathtaking places that will leave audiences with a deep-felt appreciation for the beauty of nature untouched by civilization. The storied histories of Palmyra, Midway and other atolls provide the platform from which the film explores a diversity of science and human stories.

Science on a Sphere – Knowing NOAA
11 a.m. and 12p.m.
Enter a room-sized, global display system that projects visualizations of planetary data onto a six-foot diameter sphere to help illustrate Earth System science to people of all ages.

He aliʻi ka ʻāina; he kauwā ke kanaka – Hawaiian Hall Tours

In learning from the past, we can look to the future. How can we learn from the collections of the Hawaiian Hall complex to inform a sustainable future for Hawaiʻi? Join Bishop Museum educators on a 30-minute guided tour exploring the culture and history of sustainability in the Hawaiian Islands.

Bishop Museum Fish Collection Tours
11 a.m., 12 p.m., and 2 p.m.
Get a 30-minute tour of the vaults of Bishop Museum’s Ichthyology (Fish) Collection with Collection Technician Calder Atta. Sign up at the Ichthyology Booth in the Science Adventure Center. Capacity is 10 people per tour.

Parley AIR Talks
11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Join interactive discussions at the Parley AIR Station to understand your impact on the ocean and what you can do to help to end marine plastic pollution and other threats to our oceans.

Every hour, join a tour of Bishop Museum’s new seed bank in partnership with Terraformation.

SustʻĀINAble Surfcraft Science with Mahi La Pierre
All day – Flanders Lawn
Learn about form and function of papa heʻenalu lāʻau (wooden surfboards). Keiki and ʻōpio will be able to see and touch full-size and miniature sustainable wooden boards and see how the mini-papa heʻenalu function.

Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale Interactive
All day — Great Lawn
Enter a life-sized interactive whale and learn about how humpback whales, or koholā, are an important part of history, legends, and connection to the sea.

Showcasing Museum Research

Bishop Museum will feature the research, collections, and cultural resources of Botany, Ethnology, Entomology, Ichthyology, Invertebrate Zoology, Malacology, Sustainability, Vertebrate Zoology, Education, and Bishop Museum Press. Museum researchers will showcase their work across the Pacific — ranging from native plant and species restoration, invasive species control, deep sea biodiversity exploration, taxonomic and archival work, and collections preservation as a source of inspiration for building a sustainable future.

Exhibition Highlights
See current exhibitions that explore science and sustainability. In the Castle Memorial Building, Backyard Adventures is an interactive science exhibit that engages the next generation of citizen scientists with the wonders that can be found in their own backyards. In the J. M. Long Gallery, Ola Ka Noʻeau: Excellence in Hawaiian Artistry explores the genealogy of Hawaiian artistry, particularly through generational transmission of knowledge.

Membership Lounge & Bishop Museum Press
The Membership Team will be continuing their Spring Membership Drive. Visit the Membership Lounge and pop-up library in the Atrium of Hawaiian Hall. Sign up for a new membership or rejoin our membership ohana for free gifts. In the spirit of sustainability and re-circulating items, the membership team will also be collecting book donations to our two free diverse libraries on campus.
