Living Culture Presentation

Hawaiian Kapa—Making Barkcloth with Dalani Tanahy

November 6, 2021
10:00 am – 2:00 pm
Gallery Lawn

The art of making clothing and material goods from the bark of trees has been practiced around the world. In Hawaiʻi and the Pacific, plants such as wauke (paper mulberry) were used to make kapa (barkcloth). Learn the history and future of kapa in Hawaiʻi, and spend some time using traditional Hawaiian tools and methods to create a piece of kapa yourself.

See traditional Hawaiian kapa and tools from Bishop Museum’s collections on the second floor of Hawaiian Hall.

Bishop Museum Living Culture Programs are supported by Hawai‘i State Foundation for Culture and the Arts.
