Living Culture Presentation

‘Ulana Lau Hala (Lau Hala Weaving) with Mahina & Cheryl Pukahi

Saturday, Nov 20, 2021
10:00 am – 2:00 pm
Gallery Lawn

Learn the process of preparing lau hala (pandanus leaves) for ka hana ʻulana (weaving), from the first step of gathering the lau (leaves) from the pū hala (pandanus tree) to the weaving process itself, with Mahina and Cheryl Pukahi. Lau hala are carefully harvested, sorted by size and length, and then bundled into a kī (a bunch of 40 leaves). They are then cleaned and assembled into kūkaʻa (rolled packs) in preparation for weaving.

The Living Culture Series presentations provide an opportunity for participants to meet Hawaiian cultural practitioners, talk with them about their area of expertise, and watch them practicing their skill. Each presentation is free to Museum guests and members.

Bishop Museum Living Culture Programs are supported by Hawai‘i State Foundation for Culture and the Arts.
