DESCRIPTION:Friday, Nov. 17, 2023\n5 – 9 p.m.\nGallery Lawns, Hawaiian Hall\nE Hō Mai Ka ʻIke:\nE Kūpinaʻi, E Kūwawā, E Kūhailimoe\nGrow the Legacy, Lift the Voice, Ascend the Vision\nAs we continue to honor the legacy of Aunty Edith Kanakaʻole, Bishop Museum and the Edith Kanakaʻole Foundation are proud to present a special Museum After Hours that brings together multiple generations of chanters from diverse practices and experiences to pay tribute to Aunty Edith Kanakaʻole’s significant influence on the practice of oli in Hawaiʻi today.\nDoors open at 5 p.m. At 6:30 p.m., gather with us to honor various genres of compositions and styles of oli both inside and outside Hawaiian Hall. May our voices rise and a collective vision ascend as we call for wisdom and the perpetuation of Hawaiian knowledge systems.\nParticipants include:\n\nHālau o Kekuhi: Ulumauahi Kealiʻikanakaʻoleohaililani, Iliahi Anthony, Kehau Nelson-Kaula, Kaualililehua Kanakaʻole Ioane\nHālau Ka Leo o Laka Ka Hikina o Ka Lā: Kumu Hula Kaleo Trinidad with select haumana oli\nHālau o Ka Pā Hula o Ka Lei Lehua: Kumu Hula Snowbird Bento with select haumana oli\nHālau o Na Pua Lei o Likolehua: Kumu Hula Niuliʻi Heine and haumana alakaʻi\nThe Moʻolono of Kahoʻolawe\nKiaʻi Loko iʻa from Lokoʻea Fishpond\nKa Pā o Lonopūhā, Academy of Native Hawaiian Healing Traditions: Kahea Wilcox, Kahele Joaquin, Kaulu Luʻuwai\nKamuela Chun, Keola Kawaiʻulaʻiliahi Chan, Keoni DeFranco, Ku’ulei Higashi Kanahele, Mānaiakalani Kalua, Pele Kaio, Pua Lincoln, Kalei Nu‘uhiwa, Taupōuri Tangarō, and more.\n\n \nPresentations include mele ola honua, mele wahi pana, mele hoʻohanohano, and mele koʻihonua.\n\nMele ola honua – These pieces include mele describing elemental sources such as rain, water, mountains, volcanoes, and forests. This category may encompass ceremonial mele as well.\nMele wahi pana – Mele celebrating moku, sacred spaces, specific mountain tops, helu wahi pana, or a list of places.\nMele hoʻohanohano – These pieces celebrate a specific person either in our history, or presently. This category includes mele written for aliʻi, family members, and kupuna.\nMele koʻihonua – This category includes pieces dedicated to a significant individual that tells of processes of our natural world. These mele describe natural phenomenon in connection with kanaka.\n\n \nOther onsite activities include:\nLauhala Weaving w/ Keoua Nelsen – Atrium of Hawaiin Hall\n5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. – Weave the dried leaves of the Pūhala (Pandanus) into a stunning bracelet.
