Pre-registration is recommended.\nParking: $3 per vehicle (credit card only), Free for Members\nWhat’s Happening at After Hours\nJoin us for Museum After Hours in March to celebrate the opening night of Ola Ka Noʻeau: Excellence in Hawaiian Artistry, an exhibition that explores the genealogy of Hawaiian artistry. Located in the J.M. Long Gallery, the exhibition celebrates the indigenous arts of Hawai‘i and the knowledge bearers who maintain and perpetuate these cherished insights and processes. Thirteen cultural stewards across six disciplines are featured in partnership with PA‘I Foundation through its initiative, MAMo: Maoli Arts Movement, previously Maoli Arts Month. Each discipline is represented by a senior and junior practitioner pairing, each having devoted their lives to the preservation and vitality of their respective art forms and associated value systems.\nTo celebrate the opening of Bishop Museum’s newest exhibition, in collaboration with PAʻI Foundation’s Maoli Arts Movement (MAMo) initiative, this month’s Museum After Hours features the MAMo Mākeke, live music and performances, spotlight artist conversations, keiki activities and more. See the full program below.\nALL NIGHT\nKanikapila – Gallery Lawn Mauka\nEnjoy mele and hula throughout the night with performances by award-winning singers and kumu hula.\nMAMo Mākeke – Gallery Lawn Makai + Upper Great Lawn + Flanders Lawn\nBishop Museum is proud to host the MAMo Mākeke in celebration of the opening of Ola Ka Noʻeau: Excellence in Hawaiian Artistry. The Mākeke will feature Native Hawaiian artists, cultural practitioners, and MAMo artists featured in the exhibition with cultural demonstrations, cultural classes, and one-of-a-kind products for sale. Featured artists include: Mahina Made and Mo‘o Hawai‘i, HAWAIIAN AT ART by Brook Kapukuniahi Parker, Yay Hawaii, Team Kano‘eau, ‘Umi Kai, meala flora, Teanri Designs, Keha, urban maoli, Maunalani Designs, PoMahina Designs, and more.\nFood & Drink Vendors – Great Lawn\nVisit a variety of food, drink and craft vendors on the Great Lawn. Organized by Millwood Productions.\nParley AIR Station\nJoin the team at the AIR Station for family friendly games and ocean education opportunities.\n \nPROGRAM, TOURS, and ACTIVITIES\nOla Ka Noʻeau: Artists in Conversation\n5:30 p.m. & 7:00 p.m. – Gulab & Indru Watumull Atrium\nArtists featured in Ola Ka Noʻeau: Excellence in Hawaiian Artistry will come together for moderated conversations about how they have devoted their lives to the preservation and vitality of their respective art forms and associated value systems.\nAt 5:30 p.m., Ola Ka Noʻeau co-curator Vicky Holt Takamine will moderate a conversation with practitioners representing the arts of ipu pāwehe (decorated gourds), ulana lauhala (pandanus weaving), kapa (Hawaiian barkcloth), kālai (carving), and painting. Speakers include Momi Greene, Ipolani Vaughan, Roen Hufford, ‘Umi Kai, and ‘Īmaikalani Kalahele.\nAt 7:00 p.m., Ola Ka Noʻeau co-curator Marques Hanalei Marzan will moderate a conversation with practitioners representing the arts of hulu (feather work), ulana lauhala (pandanus weaving), and kālai (carving). Speakers include Kunāne Wooten, Keoua Nelsen, and Kawika Lum-Nelmida.\nKeiki Activities w/ Ulu Aʻe Learning Center\n5:30 – 7:30 p.m. – Alien Garden\nActivities include ʻohe kāpala (create a greeting card using stamps), kōnane (outplay your opponent in a two-player strategy board game) and kiʻi pōhaku (collect the most matching petroglyphs). For ages 5-10. A parent/guardian must be present.\nLei Making w/ Maxeen Shea\n5:30 – 6:30 p.m. – Hale ʻIkehu\nUse the kui (sewing) style to string an assortment of blossoms into a beautiful lei (floral garland).
