Learn about the peoples of the Pacific and imagine what it must’ve been like to sail across Oceania in a canoe. See how lava formed the Hawaiian Islands, and learn about the science of wayfinding.
JOURNEY WITH WAYFINDERS
Voyage with the Polynesian sailing vessel Hōkūleʻa and learn how wayfinders use the stars to guide their journeys across the Pacific in this special 30-minute Planetarium presentation. 11:30 a.m. daily.
Visit Hawaiian Hall to see the legendary Mānaiakalani, the fishhook of Māui. Families shouldn’t miss the Hawaiian Hall resource center, where visitors can learn how to pound poi and try their hand at making kapa and weaving mats.
EXPLORE OCEANIA AND THE PEOPLES OF THE PACIFIC
In Pacific Hall, learn about the many cultures of the Pacific. Dress up in replicas of traditional clothing, build a canoe, and learn more about wayfinding.
EXPERIENCE THE DAILY LAVA SHOW
Touch real lava rocks, learn about volcanoes, and see molten lava being poured out of our 2500° furnace. This 25-minute show occurs daily at 12 noon and 2:30 p.m.
The voyaging canoe Hōkūleʻa is currently on a voyage around the world. See a model of the Hōkūleʻa in the Hawaiian Hall Atrium and build a digital model after your visit to our Online Learning Center, www.BishopMuseumEducation.org.
