Richard T. Mamiya Science Adventure Center
Many folks driving past Bishop Museum on the freeway have noticed the construction taking place on the campus and wondered what's going on. The activity heralds the birth of the museum's new Science Adventure Center that will be opening in the fall of 2005. With over 16,000 sq. ft. of interactive exhibits, the facility will provide opportunities to explore and learn about the volcanoes, oceans, and biology of the Hawaiian Islands.
A California- based exhibit design firm, Gyroscope, Inc., is working closely with Bishop Museum staff to develop a variety of unique and exciting exhibit experiences--including a walk-in volcano that will periodically "erupt," a "deep ocean" tank where visitors will operate underwater robotic vehicles, and laboratories to provide close-up examinations of the islands' native plant and animal life. The location of the building in the Diamond Head / makai corner of the museum grounds will also provide a buffer from the freeway to help create a more contained, "campus-like" feeling for the Great Lawn. So stay tuned and watch as this exciting new addition to the museum takes shape over the coming year!
