MAD ABOUT SCIENCE!

9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Great Lawn
4th Annual Mad About Science Festival on April 5
Bishop Museum’s fourth annual Mad About Science Festival, sponsored in part by BAE Systems and Safeway, will be held Saturday, April 5, 2008, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the Great Lawn and surrounding areas throughout the Museum campus. Kids and their parents will enjoy dozens of activities to explore and discover the wonders of science from Earth’s health to your body’s health, the insect world to out-of-this-world space sciences.
Learn about marine biology, entomology, and other scientific areas of research with our “behind the scenes” tours of our natural sciences collections. Admission is only $3 per person for Hawaii residents with ID and Active/Retired Military Members and their families with Military ID; Museum members and children 3 and under free; all others pay regular admission.
Mad About Science Festival offers a chance to experience science at Bishop Museum in a variety of ways. With the theme, Healthy Living, Healthy Planet, the 2008 Festival will offer hands-on educational activities teaching families the value of a healthy lifestyle. Ongoing demonstrations at NOAA’s Science on a Sphere will be featured and visitors are encouraged to explore the Museum’s permanent exhibit on Global Warming in the planetarium lobby. There will be fun space science activities on the Great Lawn with volunteers from the Institute of Astronomy.
Throughout the day, speakers from environmentally-conscious businesses and government agencies in the community will give talks on keeping our lifestyles, homes and land healthier and safe. Featured talks will be in various venues around the museum campus and grounds. Experts will be speaking on many topics including recycling, environmentally-friendly products, climate change impact and the sustainability of the Hawaiian Islands.
Highlighting the day will be a very special “guest”—TERRI the robot will make a special appearance at the event courtesy of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). TERRI is a fully integrated robot with the ability to interact verbally with people, sing and tell stories. NOAA will also bring a hands-on demonstration of their newest virtual world venture, “Scilands”, a Second Life world of experiencing science. With your own “avatar” you can fly through hurricanes with a research aircraft, ride a weather balloon, dive through underwater caves, surf on tsunamis and learn about the Earth in ways you never thought possible!
Among the participants in this year’s festival are the Hawai‘i Water Environment Association, Pacific Biodiesel (creating fuel for vehicles out of recycled food waste), and the O‘ahu Invasive Species Committee (working to eradicate invasive plants to save native plants). Heather’s Inflatables will have some special jumpers to bounce off any excess energy.
Admission to the event includes access to all of Bishop Museum’s exhibit halls and galleries featuring the special exhibitions, Animal Grossology. The Science Adventure Center will also be open all day. Planetarium shows and other daily museum programs will be ongoing throughout the day.
Natural Science Collection tours are offered between 1 and 3:30 p.m. only. Space is limited for these programs on a first-come, first-served basis. Reservation passes for the Natural Science Collection tours will be available at the seating/tour pass booth on the Great Lawn.
