HAWAIIAN GREEN SEA TURTLE honu Chelonia mydas ![]() Click for larger image Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles rely on the sandy islets of the French Frigate Shoals as their breeding grounds. It is estimated that about 90% of the turtles breed and nest there. Nesting occurs between April and September. The shells, or carapaces, of adult turtles can be up to 1.2 m (4 ft) in length. Adults can weigh up to 180 k (400 lbs). Marine debris, like nets and other plastic items, can pose a threat to turtles. They can be entangled by nets and sometimes the turtles mistakenly eat debris. |
