NOWRAMP Expedition Initial Results

MORE TO BE DISCOVERED AND EXPLORED:

In many ways, the expedition raised more questions than it answered. The
work of the expedition has barely scratched the surface of what there
is to learn about these remote islands. For example, fish biologists noted
a perceived lack of juvenille fish, particularly of the large predatory
fish, suggesting a possible imbalance in population structure. Terrestrial
biologists found more alien plants and insects than were expected and
are unsure what the impacts of these species will mean for the native
ecology. Given the limited time to survey each place, there are many surveys
on land and in the ocean left to complete. In particular, more marine
surveys are needed at all of the northwest atolls (Kure, Midway, Lisianski,
Maro, Pearl and Hermes, and French Frigate Shoals) which are larger and
support more variety of habitats. Rough seas also complicated research
efforts, particularly for the crew aboard the Townsend Cromwell. Scientists
believe there are more unique species that exist in these islands that
are unknown to science at this point.
