Streams are not the same everywhere in the world, and the streams in Hawaii have certain unique features. Let's begin by finding out about the native stream ecosystem in Hawaii, and then we'll see how Hawaiian streams have changed as a result of human activity.
Instructions:
1. As an observant scientist, look carefully at each of the photos on the following pages.
The photos provide information about Hawaii's streams. While scientists must be careful to not generalize about a topic from looking at a single example (such as a single photograph), these photos were selected to represent typical conditions of a Hawaii stream.
2. For each photo in the section, "Native Stream Ecosystem", observe the photo carefully. Notice what the photo tells you about the Hawaii stream in its natural state (before being diverted or disturbed). Answer the questions below the photo and record your answers on the Stream Observations Sheet.
3. For each photo in the section, "Disturbed Stream Ecosystem", observe the photo carefully. Notice what the photo tells you about the Hawaii stream after it has been diverted or otherwise disturbed by human activity. Answer the questions below the photo and record your answers on the Stream Observations Sheet.
