| Hawaiian Name:
'Ulae Common Name: Orangemouth Lizardfish Distribution: Hawaiian Islands, Austral Islands, and Pitcairn Island. |
| Remarks: Lizardfishes are aptly named. They sit patiently on sand bottoms, waiting for a fish to pass too closely. Then with blinding speed, they lurch forward and grab their meal with a mouth bristling with small teeth. Some individuals have been known to swallow fishes almost as large as themselves. Lizardfish taxonomy has been confused until recent years, due largely to the very similar color patterns many species exhibit, as well as sharing similar features, such as ray- and scale-counts and body proportions. |
