| Hawaiian Name:
Piliko'a Common Name: Arc-eye Hawkfish Distribution: Throughout the Indo-Pacific |
| Remarks: This is the most abundant species of hawkfish in Hawai'i. It rarely exceeds 5 inches in length. It can be seen in several differenc color phases; one as shown above, one which is darker brown and lacks the white stripe, and another which is burgundy in color. So far, these color differences have not been linked to differences in sex, age, or other parameters. All forms retain the brilliant purple, red and yellow arc behind the eye, which gives this fish its name. |
