README: Hawaiian Candidate Species Information Compendium

This project was funded by the USGS-BRD (formerly National Biological Service). Its primary
purpose was to provide in one place, available information on candidate
species of arthropods in the Hawaiian Islands. The information is of
broad interest to researchers ranging from systematists to ecologists and
from reserve managers and conservationists to planners and developers.

The data is presented in several ways. A CHECKLIST provides the current
accepted name of the taxon and its distribution by island. A CITATIONS
list is the result of extensive searches through the literature seeking
references to Hawaiian species and includes the original description and
attempts to cover the basic synonymy. The BIBLIOGRAPHY provides a more
complete citation for the Hawaiian references including the full title,
pagination and other pertinent publication information. Finally, the data
from SPECIMENS has been extracted from the Bishop Museum collections and
is provided here in a very basic format.

The data presented here is preliminary and includes the specimens
databased to date. The groups presented at this time include the
Curculionidae, or weevils. To provide a more robust picture of the
specimen data, all identified specimens in the genus-group that includes
candidate species has been databased (including non-candidates), so
information is more broadly available for decision makers.
