Volume: 52 Number: 1 Page(s): 69-78 Abstract: Studies of invasion by the introduced nitrogen-fixing tree Myrica faya Aiton in Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park have led to predictions that the nitrogen-rich soil M. faya creates will promote invasion by nonindigenous plant species. An insect-caused dieback of M. faya that began in the late 1980s provides an opportunity to test this hypothesis. We compared percentage cover and density of all plant species under live and dead M. faya, as well as total nitrogen in soil and plant tissue. Mean percentage cover of four common species increased significantly, and no species decreased in cover after dieback. Cover of native shrubs and herbs increased from 4.8 to 15.2%, largely due to the spread of Carex wahuensis C. A. Mey, and introduced grasses increased from 2.3 to 14.1%. Density of native shrubs did not differ beneath live and dead M. faya, but immature introduced grass individuals were significantly more numerous beneath dead M. faya. We found no differences in total nitrogen in soil or plant tissue collected beneath live versus dead M. faya. Beneath dead M. faya, cover of C. wahuensis increased with total soil N, and introduced grass cover decreased. This surprising result may be the legacy of shading effects from the live M. faya, canopies, for which total soil N may be an indicator. Success of grass seedlings compared with failure of native shrubs to recruit from seed suggests that dieback promotes nonnative grass species. Replacement of M. faya with introduced grasses may greatly increase fire risk. In 1902, Rhizophora mangle was introduced on the island of Moloka‘i, primarily for the purpose of stabilizing coastal mud flats. This species is now well established in Hawai‘i , and is found on nearly all of the major islands. At least five other species of mangroves or associated species were introduced to Hawai‘i in the early 1900s, and while none has thrived to the degree of R. mangle, at least two have established self-maintaining populations (Bruguiera gymnorrhiza and Conocarpus erectus). Mangroves are highly regarded in most parts of the tropics for the ecosystem services they provide, but in Hawai‘i they also have important negative \ecological and economic impacts. Known negative impacts include reduction in habitat quality for endangered waterbirds such as the Hawaiian stilt (Himantopus mexicanus knudseni), colonization of habitats to the detriment of native species (e.g., in anchialine pools), overgrowing native Hawaiian archaeological sites, and causing drainage and aesthetic problems. Positive impacts appear to be fewer, but include uses of local importance, such as harvesting B. gymnorrhiza flowers for lei-making, as well as some ecological services attributed to mangroves elsewhere, such as sediment retention and organic matter export. From a research perspective, possible benefits of the presence of mangroves in Hawai‘i include an unusual opportunity to evaluate their functional role in coastal ecosystems and the chance to examine unique or rare species interactions. Hurricane Iniki struck the island of Kaua‘i, Hawai‘i , on September 11, 1992, with winds exceeding 200 km/h and caused defoliation, felling of trees by snapping and uprooting, and standing tree mortality due [to] excessive limb and leaf loss. The purpose of this study was to evaluate if measured wood mechanical characteristics could be correlated with stem failure of trees under windstorm conditions. A field survey indicated that post-hurricane stem condition (snapped, uprooted, or standing) differed among five common canopy species and was significantly correlated with stem apparent elastic modulus (relative flexibility). Species that tended to snap had significantly higher apparent elastic moduli than those that remained standing or were uprooted. Wood density and stem diameter were not significantly related to stem failure mode. Native trees had a higher percentage per species of standing individuals but also had increased uprooting. Nonnative tree species were more often snapped and fewer were standing after the hurricane. The higher incidence of stem failure for introduced canopy trees may increase the spread of alien understory species following wind disturbance events. These relationships provide a simple means to predict relative differences in stem failure due to high wind conditions and should be considered in planning reforestation efforts on the Hawaiian Islands. C., established with 14 radiocarbon dates. Pollen analysis provides for the first time a detailed record of lowland vegetation on O‘ahu both before and following Polynesian settlement. Of major significance is proof given of the presence of a Pritchardia palm forest on both sides of the island before A. D. 1000, its co-dominance shared on the windward side with Dodonaea and an unknown species. After A. D. 1000, the palm forest rapidly disappeared and its two windward co-dominants declined sharply in importance. It is suggested that a lowland Pritchardia palm forest and associated species underwent rapid decline starting between about A. D. 1000 to 1200. This decline seems to have occurred earlier in coastal areas than in inland areas. By the time of Western contact in A. D. 1778 the native palm forest community had all but disappeared. Though prehistoric Polynesians are implicated in the decline, the actual mechanism remains to be demonstrated. The question of coastal infilling and progradation is also considered. Sea level change appears to be the overwhelming controlling variable. It is concluded that prehistoric Polynesians had little if anything to do with large-scale geomorphological alteration of the landscape, which has been a continuing process throughout the Holocene. Analysis with 16 restriction endonucliases revealed a total of 55 restriction site differences, 36 being shared by a subset of at least two taxa. In pairwise comparisons among these taxa, cpDNA divergence ranged from 0 to 0.46% of nucleotides. Chloroplast DNA divergence within Dubautia exceeded that of all intergeneric comparisons. A strict consensus tree from Wagner parsimony and the analyses of this variation was topologically congruent with evolutionary resolutions from Dollo parsimony and the Fitch-Margoliash genetic distance algorithm. Conflict between these outcomes and results from a phenetic analysis suggest a cpDNA molecular clock is not operating among these taxa. The cpDNA consensus phylogeny indicates monophylesis of the silversword alliance, in accord with biosystematic and cytogenetic evidence. These data further suggest: (1) rapid radiation of lineages early in the history of the silversword alliance; (2) few successful interisland migrations that led to new species lineages; (3) a unidirectional, older-to-younger island pattern of migration within the n=13 Dubautia group; (4) striking inconsistency between relative rates of morphological and cpDNA evolution among Wilkesia and five Kaua‘ian Dubautia species; and (5) hybrid speciation or extensive introgression among certain Argyroxiphium and Dubautia taxa. These phylogenetic conclusions require testing with molecular analyses of nuclear DNA to clarify the extent to which hybridization has influenced the evolution of this reproductively and genetically cohesive group of plants.
