Ray Jerome Baker

Photographs are the most popular of the Archives' collections.  Over one million images of Hawai‘i and the Pacific are held, dating from the 1840s to the present. You'll frequently see images from this collection used in books, magazines and on television.

Finding particular pictures can be done with various indexes. For example, you can search for photos of subjects like places, or people (who are arranged alphabetically by their last names). But there's much more to be found, like surfing, Waikiki, Hawaiian royalty, and historical events.

A substantial number of photographs were donated by the late Ray Jerome Baker (above). His generosity also extended to an endowment to establish the Ray Jerome Baker Room at Bishop Museum, where everyone is welcome to research photos and all the other collections of the Archives
