Kahoolawe became a penal colony in 1826. In 1841 a group of convicts
at the Kaulana penal colony escaped by first . . .
1. swimming to the islet of Molokini.
2. After resting, they swam to Maui, where they stole canoes and food.
3. Later, the convicts used the canoes to go to the womens penal colony on Lanai.
4. The men and women then returned to Kahoolawe. Two years later they were
pardoned and returned to their homes on other islands.
