Bishop Museum’s 15th Annual Bernice Pauahi Bishop Awards Dinner will be held on Saturday, August 3, 2013 on the Museum’s Great Lawn from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.  This year, we are honored to recognize the late Senator Daniel K. Inouye for his outstanding contributions to the perpetuation of the Hawaiian culture and his profound impact on both Bishop Museum and our community.

The Bernice Pauahi Bishop Awards Dinner is truly one of Hawai‘i’s don’t-miss affairs.  We invite you to experience the impactful ways the Museum is sharing culture, history and art.  The evening will feature a lively cocktail hour with gallery time, an array of music and live entertainment, a signature silent auction, our honoree tribute, and a strolling culinary adventure featuring the creations from more of Hawai‘i’s top chefs than ever before! 

Proceeds from the Pauahi Awards Dinner will benefit Bishop Museum’s collections and educational programs of culture and science, which serve over 400,000 students, scholars, kama‘āina and visitors each year. Your support is tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.

Senator Daniel K. Inouye will forever be remembered for his dedication to the people of Hawai'i, Native Hawaiians, veterans, minorities and his devotion to fighting for justice with a strong moral compass. His courage on and off the battlefield was exceeded only by his love for the country he served.

Senator Inouye was a highly decorated WWII U.S. Army Nisei combat veteran. He received the Medal of Honor, two Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star Medal and numerous other commendations during his military career. He became the highest-ranking Asian American politician in United States history.

Bishop Museum would not be the community and educational institution that it is today without Senator Daniel K. Inouye's support for key programs and services. The Native Hawaiian Culture and Arts Program (NHCAP) and the Native Hawaiian Education Act flourished under his leadership, enabling the preservation and perpetuation of Hawaiian traditions, such as kapa and the martial art of lua. In fact, the first contemporary long distance voyaging canoe made using native materials, Hawai'iloa, was carved right here on our campus with support from NHCAP.

Senator Inouye's commitment to Native Hawaiian culture and history also resulted in the Museum partnering with several Alaska Native, Native American, and national museums. These partnership projects, New Trade Winds and ECHO (Educational through Cultural and Historical Organizations), were the backbone of innovative cultural education programs at the Museum and ultimately led to the renovation and restoration of Hawaiian Hall in 2009.

Senator Inouye was also a fierce advocate for science education, and supported Bishop Museum funding with agencies such as the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. With his support, the Richard T. Mamiya Science Adventure Center was also made possible in 2005.

As Hawaii's first Congressman, who went on to the Senate and served for nine consecutive terms as our state Senator, Senator Inouye, will forever live in the hearts of his people. He left Hawai'i a better place and his impact will be felt for generations to come.

In the end, when asked how he wanted to be remembered, Senator Inouye said, very simply, "I represented the people of Hawaii and this nation honestly and to the best of my ability. I think I did OK." His enduring love for Hawai'i was perhaps captured best with his final parting expression, "Aloha."
