Bishop Museum Hires New Legal Counsel

Honolulu, HI – Bishop Museum is pleased to announce the hiring of Kahikino Noa Dettweiler as Legal Counsel.  Dettweiler is a graduate of the University of Hawai‘i, William S. Richardson School of Law and most recently worked as Deputy Attorney General for the State of Hawai‘i Family Law Division.

In his work for the State, Dettweiler advised the Departments of Health, Education, and Human Services.  He is a 2005 recipient of the Center for Computer-Assisted Legal Instruction (CALI) Award for the Future, Excellence in International Human Rights.

From 1997 to 2002, Dettweiler served as a member of the Native Hawaiian Historic Preservation Council where he reviewed issues of Hawaiian cultural and historical importance including cultural patrimony, and land and development matters.

“Noa is a great addition to Bishop Museum,” said President & CEO Timothy Johns.  “Not only does he bring legal skills that are needed in his position, but he also brings a cultural background that provides sensitivity and insight.”

Dettweiler received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Pacific Island Studies from Brigham Young University, Hawai‘i.  Prior to practicing law, he taught Pacific Island and Hawaiian Studies at Waimānalo Elementary and Intermediate School.

Dettweiler stated, “It is an honor to work among the treasures of Hawai‘i and my ancestors.  I look forward to working in this institution that plays a significant role in history and am humbled to work among those who dedicate themselves to the mission of Bishop Museum.”
