Hula Program Returns To Bishop Museum For One Month

Bishop Museum is pleased to announce it will resume the popular Music and Dance of Hawai‘i hula program for the month of June thanks to a $11,750 grant from the Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts.  The hula program begins tomorrow, Friday June 5th in the Hawaiian Hall Atrium and will occur daily through Monday June 29th except for Sundays and Tuesdays

Waianae Coast kumu hula Noelani Chang and members of Hālau Na Mamo O Ka‘ala had provided the Music and Dance of Hawai‘i program at Bishop Museum for eight years before it ended in September.

“We’re ecstatic to be back at least for the month of June,” said Kumu Noelani.  “We once again will share hula amongst the treasures of Hawai‘i.  We will share our mana‘o, and perhaps enlighten visitors by providing a deeper understanding that hula is a way for us to keep our culture alive.”

Bishop Museum President & CEO Timothy Johns said, “Our staff is very excited to have Kumu Noelani back as part of our Museum programs.  And we are grateful to the Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts for granting us the funds to enable this program even if only for a short time.”

Kumu Noelani added, “To have hula in the Atrium is wonderful as we await the opening of Hawaiian Hall in August.  There is so much for us to share.”

The hula program is included with Bishop Museum admission:  $15.95 adults; $12.95 youth (ages 4-12) and seniors (65 years and older); $8.95 kama‘āina and military; $7.95 youth and senior kama‘āina and military.  The hula program will take place daily until June 29th except for Sundays and Tuesdays, and will include:

12 noon         30 minute Hula Show (kahiko & ‘auana)

12:45 p.m.     45 minute Craft Demonstration (hula implements/easy hula lesson)
