Bishop Museum Hosts Weeklong Food Drive: A Canned Good Gets a Dollar off Admission

Honolulu, HI - Visitors who bring a canned good to Bishop Museum will receive a reduced admission rate from February 5th to 12th.  All canned goods collected will go to the Hawai‘i Food Bank to help feed the hungry.  Visitors will receive a $1 off admission per can; a maximum of three cans will be allowed.  This applies to both regular and kama‘āina rates but cannot be combined with other promotions.

According to the Hawai‘i Food Bank, the top five most wanted cans are:  canned meats and tuna, canned meals (spaghetti, chili, corned beef hash), canned soups, canned vegetables, and canned fruits.

Bishop Museum has five main exhibit halls including the Richard T. Mamiya Science Adventure Center which features interactive displays for adults and keiki.  Visitors to the Science Adventure Center become active participants in exploring areas of science, specifically volcanology, oceanography, and biodiversity.  Also on exhibit at Bishop Museum are:  A Legacy for Hawai‘i which features valued treasures of Princess Bernice Pauahi and others associated with the Hawaiian monarch.  It includes striking examples of Hawaiian mastery.  And ‘Ili Iho:  The Surface Within, in the J.M. Long Gallery, features eight contemporary Hawaiian artists who based their works on four textile treasures: a magnificent feathered cloak, a fine makaloa mat, intricate kapa, and a beautiful protest quilt.

On February 8th, the Mary Kawena Pukui Performing Arts Festival will take place on the Museum’s Great Lawn.  It is a celebration of native cultures through the ancient art of storytelling and dance.  Kama‘āina and military get a special rate of $3; with a canned food item donation rate will be $2; children 3 and under are free.
