Junks are Chinese sailing vessels. They were efficient and sturdy ships that traveled across oceans as early as the 2nd century AD. Junks incorporated numerous technical advances in sail plan and hull designs that were later adopted in Western shipbuilding.
The Taiping arrived in Honolulu from the West Coast on December 21, 2008 and is currently docked at the Ala Wai Boat Harbor where it is open for public tours.
The Hawai‘i Maritime Center features 50 exhibits portraying Hawai‘i’s rich maritime seafaring history. For more information please visit www.bishopmuseum.org/exhibits/hmc/hmc.html or call (808) 599-3810.
