Star Gazing at Bishop Museum Watumull Planetarium Now Available Twice a Month
Due to popular demand, Bishop Museum is now adding a second monthly astronomy program, The Sky Tonight at its Watumull Planetarium. For several years, Bishop Museum has offered the live planetarium show every first Friday of each month. Effective January 2009 the Museum will present The Sky Tonight on both the first and the third Fridays of each month at 8:00 p.m.
“Over the last six months, The Sky Tonight has grown in popularity,” noted Bishop Museum’s Director of Education, Mike Shanahan. “Every first-Friday show since this last summer has completely sold out.”
The Sky Tonight is an hour-long, live tour of the current night sky in the Watumull Planetarium at Bishop Museum. Presented by the Hawaiian Astronomical Society, the audience gets an overview of the planets, stars and special astronomy happenings for the month to come. Following the sky talk, the group is invited to Bishop Museum’s observatory to peek through a 12.5 inch telescope.
Shows in January 2009 occur on January 2 and January 16; from that point forward, the program will occur on the first and third Fridays of each month.
Reservations are required for this astronomical program by calling 848-4168. Admission costs are: $6 for general admission, $4 for youths ages 4 to 12; Bishop Museum members and members of the Hawaiian Astronomical Society are free.
