Come experience a detailed tour of the current Hawaiian evening sky during The Sky Tonight. This live planetarium program is hosted by Barry Peckham, Vice President of the Hawaiian Astronomical Society. Telescope-viewing in the Museum observatory follows the show, weather permitting. The Sky Tonight is offered on the first and third Fridays of each month at 8 p.m. The show begins promptly and there is no late seating. Please call (808) 848-4168 for reservations. One last chance to meet Megalodon face to face! Join Richard Paglinawan and Keith Kruger inside our Megalodon: Largest Shark That Ever Lived exhibit for a fascinating evening of shark stories. Learn about the value of fossilized shark teeth and the stories they can tell us about what sharks looked like, how they lived, what they ate, and how they died. You can even see Keith’s personal collection of fossilized Megalodon teeth! Then, learn about the cultural significance of sharks and shark stories to the Hawaiian people. Do you have a shark story? Dr. Sharon Shaffer, Director of the Smithsonian early Enrichment Center (SEEC) will present this workshop aimed at community educators interested in applying the concept of a museum-based approach to teaching and learning. Dr. Shaffer will explain the value of object-based learning and visual literacy as a methodology for teaching early literacy, math, science, and social studies using effective teaching strategies for the classroom and museum. Workshop topics include: The Power of Objects Characteristics of Young Learners; Beyond Naming & Labeling; Learning to Look; Expanding Concepts – Building Background Knowledge; Strategies for Early Learners; Children’s Literature, Objects, Visual Arts. Ever wanted to learn the craft of Lei Hulu? Learn from one of the masters, Kumu Joanne Kahanamoku Sterling who will take students through the cultural and historical background of lei hulu. This workshop requires a commitment of four Saturdays, beginning January 17 through February 7th. AMY GREENWELL GARDEN WORKSHOP – BACKYARD KALO FARMING

Be a part of “Backyard Kalo Farming” with garden foreman Manuel Rego. For 24 years, Manuel has cared for the extensive collection of kalo at Amy Greenwell Garden. He and his assistant Suano Kadooka, will teach lessons in propagation, growth, and preparation of kalo. Participants will be supplied with kalo huli, or propagates, which may then be planted for harvest. This workshop will include Maui Lehua and other miscellaneous varieties. The 9th Annual Mary Kawena Pukui Performing Arts Festival is a celebration of native cultures through the ancient art of storytelling and dance. This event will feature Native storytellers from Hawai‘i, Alaska, Mississippi, and Massachusetts. These performers are participants of Education through Cultural and Historical Organizations or ECHO. This year’s theme will be “The Way to the Heart: Changing Food, Foodways and Culture.” You don’t want to miss out on a unique dance performance directed by Peter Espiritu of Tau Dance Theatre. Horticulturist Brian Kiyabu has propagated thousands of native plants during his five years at the Garden. Prior to joining the staff in 2003, he worked for the Volcanoes National Park and U.S. Forest Service. Brian is currently propagating: Wahine noho kula, Kokia cookiei, a variety of colored Ohia Lehua and Olana. Workshop participants will keep some of the plants they propagate.
