Falsetto singer Darren Benitez will open the concert. Benitez has established a reputation as a solo artist. In 1996, he was nominated in five categories for the Na Hoko Hanohano Awards, and earned Most Promising Artist of the Year recognition. In 1998 he release Mother of the Sea, which garnered several more nominations. His latest release, Dear Mama, reflects his love for music and Hawaiian traditions.
Maunalua have been playing together for nearly a decade starting at backyard luaus and then traveling to Japan, Tahiti, Las Vegas and beyond. The contemporary Hawaiian musical group consists of Bobby Moderow, Jr., who was schooled by the legendary Raymond Kane, playing rhythm and slack key guitar, as well as providing vocals; Kahi Kaonohi, a journeyman musician with many local groups and halau before settling in with Maunalua, playing bass guitar and singing; and Bruce Spencer, whose strong foundation in local music harmonies rounds out the group with his six-string ukulele and vocals.
In 2001, the group won Na Hoku Hanohano Best Hawaiian Album award, establishing the group as leading edge musicians. They followed up with the CD release, Kuleana, which also garnered good reviews. Kuleana evokes the memories of old Hawaii through traditional favorites such as Nani Kauai, Aloha Ka Manini, Kealohalani and Sanoe, and a beautiful rendition of Liliu E.
Come early to stake out your place on the Great Lawn in front of historic Hawaiian Hall. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. for Museum members and 6 p.m. for general admission. Concerts begin at 7 p.m. Only low-height (12-inches and under) beach chairs are permitted on the Great Lawn as well as blankets and beach mats. (Hand-held umbrellas or rain slickers are always good to have on hand for the occasional light mauka showers.) Pre-concert programming will include prize giveaways and other surprises.
