Native Hawaiian Artisans at Bishop Museum: Weekend Craft Demonstrations Offered
Na Hana No‘eau is a new arts and crafts demonstration program at Bishop Museum beginning February 16 through June 29, 2008. The temporary program is funded by a grant from the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts to help promote the arts, crafts, and culture of Native Hawaiians. Na Hāna No‘eau will be featured on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. During this time Native Hawaiian artisans will demonstrate their arts and crafts in the new Atrium Lobby located between Hawaiian and Polynesian Halls at Bishop Museum in the main Hawaiian Hall complex. These arts and crafts demonstrations are included with the price of regular Museum admission.
Among the featured artists will be carver and Hawaiian weapons-maker Umi Kai; weaver Janice Kai; lei maker Dorothy Sakamoto; weaver and painter Kawahine Tokunaga, and others. Native Hawaiian artists who are interested in demonstrating their arts and crafts with museum visitors through this activity may contact program coordinator Hiilani Shibata at hshibata@bishopmuseum.org; or call (808) 848-4149.
