New Public Hours for Bishop Museum Library and Archives
Effective February 18, the Bishop Museum Library and Archives will shorten its public hours by one day because of a temporary staff shortage. New public access hours, effective February 18, are Wednesdays through Fridays from noon to 4 p.m.; and Saturdays (except those on holiday weekends) from 9 a.m. to noon. (The Library and Archives are closed on Saturdays that fall on holiday weekends.) The department will no longer be open on Tuesdays according to Betty Kam, the Museum’s Vice President of Cultural Resources.
The Bishop Museum Library collection consists of over 40,000 volumes with an emphasis on the cultural and natural history of the Pacific. Special strengths are found in anthropology, music, botany, entomology, and zoology subjects. The Library’s database of published primary sources relating to 18th and 19th century Hawaii includes collections of published diaries, narratives, and memoirs. Among the special collections available for research are the Captain A. W. F. Fuller Collection of books, journals, and pamphlets relating largely to early voyages in the Pacific; and the George R. Carter Collection of publications focusing on the cultural and scientific aspects of Hawaii.
The Library subscribes to more than 1,000 periodicals and houses close to 3,000 inactive periodical titles. Among the resources are microforms of Hawaiian, Japanese, and English language newspapers and various other serial and monographic items.
