Bernice Pauahi Bishop Awards Dinner Honors Akaka, Doane

Bishop Museum ’s major fundraiser for the year, this prestigious event honors two long-standing community members for their devotion and outstanding civic leadership and who exemplify the spirit and purpose of the Museum’s founder Charles Reed Bishop, and for devotion and outstanding civic leadership. This year’s honorees are U. S. Senator Daniel K. Akaka and W. Allen Doane.
U.S. Senator Daniel K. Akaka, this year’s Robert J. Pfeiffer medalist, has served Hawai‘i and his country for most of his life. After graduating from the Kamehameha School for Boys in 1942, he served with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Saipan and Tinian during World War II. Later, he went on to receive a master’s degree in education from the University of Hawai ‘i, beginning a lifelong commitment to education. In the Senate, Akaka has been a tireless advocate for veterans, working to improve the services and opportunities of those who served in the armed forces. He has also been a powerful champion of the rights of indigenous peoples, especially Native Hawaiians. Akaka is America ’s first senator of Native Hawaiian ancestry, and the only Chinese- American member of the United States Senate. His unique perspective of Hawaiian history and its multicultural society have helped him promote dialogue and reconciliation between Native Hawaiians and the Federal Government.
Allen Doane, this year’s Charles Reed Bishop Medalist, is a fixture in Hawai‘i’s business community. After getting his MBA from Harvard Business School , Doane began his business career with C. Brewer back in 1975. Later, he became group vice president of IU International. In 1988, he was named chief operating officer of the Shidler Group, and, in 1991, he joined Alexander & Baldwin. As Chairman and CEO of Alexander & Baldwin, Doane oversees A & B Properties, Matson Navigation Company, Matson Integrated Logistics, and Hawaiian Commercial. Doane has also served as chairman of the Hawai‘i Chamber of Commerce and on the boards of a number of community organizations. He proudly served as an officer in the United States Navy for four years.
Nearly 1000 people attend making this the largest and most lavish event on Bishop Museum ’s Great Lawn each year. The event celebrates individuals who have made life-long commitments to Hawai‘i and its people. Under the starry night, there’s live entertainment and an elegant dinner with fine wines, behind-the-scenes tours—including a peek inside of Hawaiian Hall while it undergoes a $21 million renovation, and a celebration of excellence in philanthropy and leadership. 20007 Na Hōkū Hanohano award winners Kaukahi will be performing.
Among the top restaurants participating this year are Nobu Waikīkī, Roy ’s, d.k Steak House, Halekūlani, Nalo Farms, Pacific Club, Alan Wong’s, Hiroshi Eurasian Tapas, Chef Mavro, and Elua Restaurant and Wine Bar. Celebrity cuisine guest will be Chef Susur Lee from the noted restaurants Susur and Lee from Toronto , Canada .
Chef Susur Lee has been called a “culinary genius” by Zagat, and “one of the hottest chefs alive” by Food & Wine Magazine. Susur opened its doors in 2000 in Toronto and quickly earned the prestigious position as one of the top 50 restaurants in the world by the U.K. ’s Restaurant Magazine. Susur’s distinctive style is recognized worldwide for his skill in encapsulating international ingredients and bringing harmony to flavors. Restaurant Lee is a AAA Four Diamond winner and a Five Star winner from the American Academy . Chef Susur Lee recently tied Chef Bobby Flay in the Iron Chef America competition last year.
