The Science Café Meets August 21:
Surf-Stoked Science Explored in Presentation

The Science Café is Bishop Museum’s new science program designed to bring together great minds and lifelong learners for intriguing talks about the science of tsunamis, surf, hurricanes, climate change and environmental science, among other topics. The presentations are always followed by opportunities to mix and mingle with like-minded researchers, educators, and scientists.

The Science Café began in April 2007 and continues through September 2007 with once-a-month presentations by leading scientists and researchers in their respective fields. The Science Café is set for August 21 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Watumull Planetarium’s Cooke Rotunda at Bishop Museum. Admission is free for the presentation with no-host refreshments offered after the formal presentation in Atherton Halau.

The August 21 presentation, Cowabunga! Surf-stoked Science, features Pat Caldwell, NOAA Data Center Hawai‘i Liaison. Caldwell began surfing at the age of 13 on beaches near Charleston, South Carolina. His passion led to studies in meteorology at Florida State University to predict the best surf conditions. Caldwell arrived in Hawai‘i in 1987 with the primary goal to surf as much as he could, as often as he could. He found a position as a data librarian with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration based at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, where he remains today.

Caldwell continues his day-to-day surf forecasting, with distribution evolving from phone in the 1980s, to email in the early 1990s, and finally to the Internet since 1997. Since 2002, he has collaborated with the Honolulu National Weather Service for production of detailed O‘ahu surf forecast.Coast dwellers crave information on present near future surf conditions for planning their near shore activities Space is limited; Reservations requested, call (808) 847-8203.

The ScienceCafé presentations are planned as follows: September 18: Celebrating 200 years of NOAA Science and Service with Bill Thomas, Director of NOAA Pacific Services Center.

The Science Café is sponsored by an environmental literacy grant from NOAA’s Office of Education, in partnership with the NOAA Pacific Services Center’s B-WET Hawai‘i Program.
