Moonlight Mele Offers Special Rates for Military Families

Get your beach blankets and sand chairs ready­—It’s time to kani ka pila in Kalihi! Bank of Hawai‘i will present the second Moonlight Mele concerts on the Great Lawn at Bishop Museum on July 19 with ‘ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro headlining. Special reduced admission tickets will be available for active duty and retired Military and their families at all MWR ticket offices. Tickets are $12.50 for Active or Retired Military Members and their families with ID; Children (4-12) are $10; Children 3 and under are free.

The concerts are supported in part by Aloha Airlines, Better Brands, and Hawaiian 105 KINE. The next concert will be held July 19 and will feature the Jake Shimabukuro. Tickets are on sale now at the Bishop Museum box office daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; or at Honolulu Box Office, (808) 550-TIKS (8457); online at www.honoluluboxoffice.com; or in person at 1188 Bishop Street, Suite 609. Tickets for Military and their families are also available at the MWR ticket offices on O‘ahu military bases.

Jake Shimabukuro’s Gently Weeps won Best Instrumental Album of the Year at the 2007 Na Hōkū Hanohano Awards. Known for his lightning-fast fingers and revolutionary playing techniques, Shimabukuro is recognized as one of the world’s top ‘ukulele musicians. He plays jazz, blues, funk, classical, bluegrass, folk, flamenco, and rock like nobody every played it before. Shimabukuro says his mission is to “show everyone that the ‘ukulele is capable of so much more than only the traditional Hawaiian music with which many have associated it.”

Come early to stake out your place on the Great Lawn in front of historic Hawaiian Hall. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. for Museum members and 6 p.m. for general admission. Concerts begin at 7 p.m. Pre-concert programming will include ola (storytelling) presentations by Bishop Museum cultural educators, prize giveaways including free air trips on Aloha Airlines, and other surprises.

Advance tickets for single concerts are $17.50 General admission; $12.50 for Bishop Museum members, Active and Retired Military and their families with ID; $10 for Bank of Hawaii customers and employees with ID; Children 4-12 are $10 (children 3 and under are free). (Discounted tickets for Bank of Hawaii customers and employees are only available at Bishop Museum.) Buy early--tickets at the door on the night of the concert are $20 General Admission; $12.50 Members with membership card and Military with ID; $10 Bank of Hawai‘i customers with bank statement or check stub and Bank of Hawaii employees with employee ID; $10 Children 4-12; Children 3 and under are free.

Only low-height (12-inches and under) sand chairs are permitted on the Great Lawn as well as blankets and beach mats. (A hand-held umbrella is always good to have on hand for the occasional light mauka showers.) Local eateries will be providing food and beverages available for purchase. No coolers or outside food is permitted.

Only sand chairs under 12-inches high are allowed. Hand-held umbrellas are encouraged for the occasional mauka showers. Participating sponsors include Aloha Airlines, Better Brands, and Hawaiian 105 KINE. Pre-concert activities include ola (storytelling) presentations by Bishop Museum cultural educators, prize giveaways including free air trips by Aloha Airlines, and other surprises.
