Bishop Museum Press Books Recognized for Excellence at the 2007 Ka Palapala Po‘okela Awards
The Bishop Museum Press was the big winner at the 2007 Ka Palapala Po‘okela Awards given annually by the Hawaii Book Publishers Association, picking up four awards and one honorable mention. Lono and the Magical Land Beneath the Sea by Caren Loebel-Fried was recognized for both Excellence in Children’s Hawaiian Culture and Excellence in Children’s Literature; Lua: Art of the Hawaiian Warrior by Richard Paglinawan, Mitchell Eli, Moses Kalauokalani and Jerry Walker was recognized for Excellence in Hawaiian Culture; in the same category there was a tie for the honorable mention—Ka ‘ Oihana Lawai‘a: Hawaiian Fishing Traditions earned an honorable mention along with UH Press’ Broken Trust; designer Julie Chun was given the Excellence in Design award for her work on Lua: Art of the Hawaiian Warrior.
“It’s terrific to receive this kind of recognition from our community,” says Press Director, Ron Cox, “particularly for a publication like Lua, which was a twenty-year labor of love on the part of many people to help preserve and perpetuate the art form for generations to come.”
Winners of the Ka Palapala Po`okela awards were announced Friday evening at a ceremony held at McCoy Pavilion at Ala Moana Beach Park, coinciding with the opening of the second annual Hawaii Book & Music Festival.
