Bishop Museum Press Wins Prestigious Award
The Bishop Museum Press has been selected to receive the 2007 Literature Award from the Council on Botanical and Horticultural Libraries (CBHL) for its publication, A Tropical Garden Flora: Plants Cultivated in the Hawaiian Islands and Other Tropical Places.
The annual Literature Award is given by CBHL to both the author and publisher of a work that makes a significant contribution to the literature of botany or horticulture. A Tropical Garden Flora was selected for the award in the Technical Category.
“This well-researched and thorough book in many ways sets a new definition for a ‘garden flora.’ Much more than keys, description, and cultural needs, the reader will also learn of the names and uses of each plant in various Pacific Rim cultures; concerns of invasiveness and recommended alternatives; economic potentials; the value in home gardening and landscape design; and even if the flowers can be used in lei, ” said one nominator.
“Our judges deemed this a wonderful, useful reference,” said Janet Evans, Chair of the 2007 CBHL Annual Literature Award Committee. “Congratulations! The Bishop Museum Press is to be commended for publishing a work that makes such significant contribution to our literature.”
The award will be presented in Cincinnati in June during the CBHL annual conference.
Published by Bishop Museum Press in 2005, A Tropical Garden Flora by George W. Staples and Derral R. Herbst describes more than 2100 species of tropical and subtropical plants, provides brief descriptions and keys for identification, and weaves together the origins, uses, biology, landscape properties, and practical tips for propagating and growing each species. The plant descriptions and keys are augmented with Anna Stone’s line drawings of more than 400 species, a comprehensive illustrated glossary of botanical terms, and an extensive list of published sources for additional information. The retail price for the 932-page volume is $59.95 and is available at the Museum’s Shop Pacifica and other booksellers throughout the islands.
