Public Invited to FREE MAMo Exhibition Opening May 3

On May 3rd, 2007, Bishop Museum will join with PA’I Foundation and other Native Hawaiian arts organizations to honor six Native Hawaiian master visual artists: Joseph Hauoli Dowson, Sr.; Sam Ka‘ai; Sean K.L. Browne; Leialoha Kanahele; Jo-Anne Kahanamoku-Sterling; and Puanani Van Dorpe. The exhibition opening for MAMo AWARDS 2007: CELEBRATING OUR MASTERS, is free and open to the public from 6 p.m. on May 3.

For the second year in a row, as part of Maoli Arts Month, a group of native master visual artists were selected by their peers for their visionary leadership. Says project manager Noelle Kahanu, “like the navigators of old, each of these master artists have led us to distant shores. Through skill, faith, and sheer determination, they have reached beyond the horizon, enabling thousands to follow in their wake.”

The awards ceremony, which is free and open to the public, will take place on Thursday, May 3 rd, at 6 p.m. It will be held at Bishop Museum on the lawn fronting Hawaiian Hall.

Following the ceremony, there will be an exhibit opening at the Joseph M. Long Gallery that celebrates the work of these master artists. This exhibit will remain on display through August 26, 2007 .
