Bishop Museum ’s Holoholo heads for Kaua‘i
Science Outreach Program brings Hands-on Science to Schools

Holoholo Science is going holoholo to Kaua‘i this month. Bishop Museum’s traveling science outreach program will be on Kaua‘i visiting Kekaha Elementary (Grades 4, 5, 6) on April 24, King Kaumuali’i (Kindergarten) on April 25th, and Waimea Canyon Elementary on April 26 for Family Science Night.

Holoholo Science brings hands-on science to public and private schools throughout the Hawaiian Islands, event to school on Lāna‘i and Moloka‘i. Using small and large group sessions, Holoholo Science educators provide students with the opportunity to think and act like scientists, connecting real science with what they are learning in their classrooms. Each session is designed to support student achievement in national and Hawai‘i content and performance standards to help improve test scores.

Presented by authentic Bishop Museum scientists and a dynamic group of science educators, the programs encourage inquiry and exploration, and offer a rare chance to handle scientific specimens, cultural artifacts, and state-of-the-art science equipment.

Holoholo Science offers interactive assemblies, classroom programs, Starlabs and Family Science Nights with a flexible menu of options to match the needs of area schools who need quality programs to augment what their own teachers are offering. These programs are offered to neighbor island schools at designated times of the year. The Holoholo Science team typically spends one week on each island. Bishop Museum is able to absorb shipping and travel costs because of generous foundation support. Title 1 schools receive additional discounts.

Programs are offered for students of all ages, from Kindergarten through Grade 12. Communities can choose from programs in ecology, geology, biology, space science and astronomy, anthropology, health, and medicine. Among the specific programs offered are: Medical Mystery Festival, Who Wants to be an Astronaut; Sky Talk; Tales of Trash: The Northwestern Hawaiian Island; X-Stream Bio Detectives; Dig This! Uncovering Hawai‘i’s Past; Rockin Pohaku; Steam Ecology; Marine Ecology: Northwestern Hawaiian Islands; Space Stations Wonders: A Way-Out Lab; Attractive Celestial Bodies; Up in the Sky; Star Hunt; Stories under the Stars; Explorers of Polynesia; Explorers of Mauna Kea; Water Works Festival; Festival of Science; StarLab Planetarium.

The inflatable StarLab planetarium helps children learn about the constellations in the night sky, planets, the moon, seasons and Polynesian voyaging traditions. Family festivals let Mom and Dad get in on the fun. Programs designed for small classrooms as well as large lively interactive assemblies are also available.
