Dr. Tianlong Jiao Lectures on Chinese Maritime Cultures

2007 Traditions of the Pacific Lecture/Fieldtrip Series Begins

Bishop Museum ’s Chairman of the Anthropology Department, Dr. Tianlong Jiao, will present a lecture entitled TheOrigins of Pacific Seafaring on January 25, from 6 to 8 p.m. in Atherton Hālau at Bishop Museum . Dr. Jiao’s presentation will provide a glimpse of what visitors will discover at the upcoming exhibition Lost Maritime Cultures: China and the Pacific . Dr. Jiao will discuss the Austronesians, who were the ancestors of all the peoples of Oceania and among the earliest voyagers from Asia to the South Pacific.

The presentation is the first program in the 2007 line-up of the Traditions of the Pacific educational series sponsored by the Bishop Museum Association Council. Traditions of the Pacific is an ongoing program that highlights the cultural and natural science heritage of Hawai‘i, Asia , and the Pacific through stories, fieldtrips, lectures, and workshops. The popular program began in 1991 and will continue through 2007. The program is free to Bishop Museum members.

Dr. Jiao’s lecture will be followed on Saturday, January 27, by a Fieldtrip to the Hawai‘i Maritime Center (HMC)from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. At HMC, visitors will be able to view two voyaging films: Tahere Tikitiki: The Making of a Maori Canoe and Rere Ki Uta Rere Ki Tai: The Voyage. Fieldtrip admission is $8 per person and is free for Bishop Museum Members. Dr. Jiao is the Project Director for Lost Maritime Cultures: China and the Pacific, a landmark exhibition of Chinese art and artifacts excavated from several Chinese National Heritage sites in Southwestern China . This landmark exhibition, organized by Bishop Museum , will be on view February 24 through April 15, 2007 .
