BANK OF HAWAII PRESENTS 2006 MOONLIGHT MELE ON THE LAWN

HONOLULU — A trio of Hawai‘i’s hottest Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award winners and a promising new talent will take to Bishop Museum’s Great Lawn for the 2006 Moonlight Mele On the Lawn Concert Series. Presented by Bank of Hawaii, the three concerts will feature traditional Hawaiian music and contemporary titles from Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award winners. Bishop Museum’s Great Lawn will be host to:

Thursday, June 15, 2006 –Nā Palapalai and Aaron J. Salā,

Two of Hawai‘i’s top musical acts kick off this summertime tradition. Nā Hōkū Hanohano award winners Nā Palapalai are world-renowned for their ability to capture the magic of Hawaii’s nostalgic sound and will delight guests under the stars. They will be joined by Aaron J. Salā, the extraordinary piano talent who has helped make performers, like Nā Palapalai and Raiatea Helm, award-winning recording artists. Now with his debut album, Ka ‘Upu Aloha - alone with my thoughts, Salā steps forward as a solo recording artist, composer and innovative arranger.

Wednesday, July 26, 2006 – Jake Shimabukuro

Known for lightning-fast fingers and revolutionary playing techniques, Jake Shimabukuro is a master of the ‘ukulele. The virtuoso shatters musical boundaries, playing jazz, blues, funk, classical, bluegrass, folk, flamenco, and rock. While Jake has great respect and love for traditional Hawaiian ‘ukulele music, his mission is to show everyone that the ‘ukulele is capable of so much more.

Tuesday, August 15, 2006 – Makaha Sons

The powerful Makaha Sons, known for their magical harmonies and on-stage humor, will lead the final concert of the season. Louis "MOON" Kauakahi, Jerome "BOOGIE" Koko, and John Koko will provide a spectacular night of Hawaiian song and dance celebrating the life we live in Hawai‘i through music and hula.

Concert-goers are encouraged to arrive early for optimal seating and to visit the Museum’s Science Adventure Center. Delicious barbeque plates and sandwiches from May’s Hawai‘i, wine and snacks from Formaggio, and beer and desserts from The Willows will be available for purchase throughout the night to help create that ultimate sunset picnic on the Great Lawn. Moonlight Mele on the Lawn is also sponsored in part by Better Brands, Keoki Brewing Company, Honolulu Advertiser and Hawaiian 105 KINE.

Doors open at 6:00 p.m. to the general public and at 5:30 p.m. for Bishop Museum members. Tickets for the concert series are $15 General Admission, $10 for Bishop Museum Members and Bank of Hawai‘i customers and employees, and $5 for Children 4-12.
