JANUARY WORKSHOP AT AMY GREENWELL ETHNOBOTANICAL GARDEN FEATURES HAWAIIAN HERBAL MEDICINE
HONOLULU – Bishop Museum ’s Amy Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden in Kona continues its monthly series of workshops in January with a lomilomi and lā’au lapa’au, or Hawaiian herbal medicine, class on January 20, 2006 , from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. A potluck lunch is scheduled for 12 noon to 1 p.m.
Led by Kumu Dane Silva, students will learn about native medicinal plants, protocol surrounding Hawaiian medicine, and preparation and use of lomilomipopokapa‘i (medicine balls). The medicine balls are used to rub the joints and large muscles during lomilomi massage.
Kumu Silva is a licensed massage therapist and Hawai‘i Island member of Kupuna La‘au Lapa‘au O Hawai‘i. His late mentors included Papa Henry Auwae and Kahu Lanakila Brandt of Hawai‘i, and Uncle Harry Mitchell and Kahu Kawika Ka‘alakea of Maui .

The Amy B.H. Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden is a Bishop Museum facility, located in South Kona on the Mamalahoa Highway . During the year, more than 9,000 visitors experience the Garden and explore the plants of traditional Kona. The Garden is a regular stop for school tours, and people of all ages enjoy workshops on traditional Hawaiian arts.
