“HO‘OHULI, TO TURN AROUND” EXPLORES THE NOTION OF CHANGE AND TRANSFORMATION, ON DISPLAY DECEMBER 10 THROUGH MARCH 12
HONOLULU – Such is the power of life, of seasonal change, of life renewed, and earth transformed. Like Kapihe’s prophesy foretold, we are made stronger as we are turned asunder. It is in this spirit, that Bishop Museum welcomes the newest exhibit, “Ho‘ohuli, To Turn Around” to the Vestibule Gallery, on display December 10, 2005 through March 12, 2006 .
Born in collaboration with artist, educator and filmmaker, Meleanna Meyer, this exhibit showcases the notion of change and transformation through the works of established and emerging contemporary Native Hawaiian artists: Kala Hoe, Hiko Hanapi, Carl F.K. Pao, Kawahine Tokunaga, Meala Bishop, Alana Ruth Tyau, Elroy Juan, Meleanna Meyer, Paulette Kahalepuna, Orrin Nakanelua, and Rocky Jensen. The centerpiece of the exhibit is an 8 ft. high by 16 ft. wide composite mural comprised of 40 boards that were collaborated on by students from Kamehameha School , Hālau Lokahi, Hakipu‘u Learning Center , and Samuel Kamakau Charter Schools .
In addition to the contemporary and collaborative pieces, the Bishop Museum will showcase the Lono Makua or akua loa o Lono, the only known ancient Makahiki image in the world, from its collections to mark the change in seasons to Makahiki season.
The museum will host a free, public preview of the exhibit on Friday, December 9 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Vestibule Gallery. This exhibit is made possible with support from the Native Hawaiian Culture and Arts Program.
