BISHOP MUSEUM HOSTS HAWAIIAN HISTORY TEACHER WORKSHOP

HONOLULU – In its ongoing effort to support educators, Bishop Museum will host a free teacher workshop focusing on Native Hawaiian interpretations of events in Hawaiian History. The workshop will be held on Saturday, November 12 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Pākī Conference Room I at Bishop Museum .

During the workshop, teachers will participate in a lesson that was created using the research-based “Understanding by Design” curriculum development model. While the lesson will be aligned with Hawai‘i state social studies standards for grade 7, this workshop will be relevant to teachers of any grade level who teach Hawaiian history. After the workshop, teachers may take an optional “sneak preview” of the Hawaiian Origins Tunnel in the Museum’s new Science Adventure Center . The Hawaiian Origins Tunnel features chanters performing selections of the Kumulipo creation chant in a vivid black light environment with art created by Hawai‘i schoolchildren. In the lower section of the 160 ft. long tunnel, they will hear chants related to Pele(the volcano goddess) and Kamapua‘a (the legendary pig demi-god) as they move into a volcanic environment.

The workshop registration deadline is November 4. To register for the workshop or for more information, contact Bishop Museum Education Department at 848-4168 or email education@bishopmuseum.org.
