CELEBRATE ARBOR DAY WITH FREE NATIVE TREES FROM AMY GREENWELL ETHNOBOTANICAL GARDEN
**Trees also available at Outrigger Keauhou Bech Hotel**
HONOLULU – Amy Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden, a Bishop Museum facility located in Kona, is celebrating Arbor Day by giving away native trees and shrubs on Saturday, November 5 at the garden and at the Outrigger Keauhou Beach Resort. Featured trees at both sites are kou, a flowering shade tree that is good for lei and wood carving; milo, a wonderful tree for screening or shading; and loulu, Kona’s native palm.
Trees are available at Outrigger Keauhou Beach Resort from 9 – 11 a.m., or while supplies last. Outrigger Keauhou Beach Resort is located at 78-6740 Ali‘i Drive.
Amy Greenwell Gardens will have trees available from 8:30 a.m. until 12 noon, or while supplies last. Those interested in the Arbor Day tree giveaway at the Gardens are asked to use the driveway at mile marker 110 and drive to the Garden office to pick up the free trees. There is a limit of one tree per family.
Dedicated gardeners will want to visit both sites as selection varies. The Arbor Day tree giveaway is funded by Kaulunani, an Urban Forestry Program of the D.L.N.R. Division of Forestry and Wildlife; the Native Hawaiian Culture and Arts Program; and Education through Cultural & Historical Organizations (ECHO), an initiative under the Office of Innovation and Improvement of the U.S. Department of Education that provides educational enrichment to Native and non-Native children and lifelong learners.
The Amy B.H. Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden is a Bishop Museum facility, located in South Kona on the Mamalahoa Highway. During the year, more than 9,000 visitors experience the Garden and explore the plants of traditional Kona. The Garden is a regular stop for school tours, and people of all ages enjoy workshops on traditional Hawaiian arts. Admission is a suggested donation of $4 per person and free for Bishop Museum Association members. For more information, call (808) 323-3318.
