HONOLULU HARBOR FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES SPECIAL TRIVIA POSTER CONTEST FOR Hawai‘i SCHOOLCHILDREN

HONOLULU – In celebration of the 5th Annual Honolulu Harbor Festival, Matson Navigation invites island keiki to enter a special trivia poster contest that explores the question, “How will cargo be shipped in the future?” The contest is open to keiki in grades K-6.

The poster contest involves children drawing their ideas about how Hawai‘i ’s cargo will be shipped to and from the islands everyday.

Drawings must be on an 11” x 17” poster board, and all entries are due by November 1, 2004. Entrants must include the name of the contestant, grade level, school, contact person and daytime phone number on the back of their entry. All entries must be consistent with the selected trivia theme for 2004. Submit entries to the Harbors Division, 79 South Nimitz Highway, Honolulu, Hawai‘i 96813, Attention Diane Fujio. Winning entries become the property of the Honolulu Harbor Festival for promotional opportunities.

Awards will be given out on November 20, 2004 at the Honolulu Harbor Festival. Contest winners will receive $100 for first place, $75 for second place, $50 third place and three entrants will receive $25 for honorable mention. In addition, the first-place winner’s class will receive a sponsored bus trip to Matson Navigation and the Hawai‘i Maritime Center, and both first and second place winners will receive $100 for a class celebration.

Container shipping was introduced to Hawai‘i in 1958 as one of the most modern, efficient and economical means of transporting cargo.

Underwritten by the local maritime history, the Honolulu Harbor Festival’s objective is to remind the community of the harbor’s presence and importance: economically, culturally and historically.
